This year, I’m proud to be competing in a queer bartending competition with a cocktail that celebrates creativity, sustainability, and community. Brunch is a ✨Drag✨ is inspired by the joy, resilience, and self-expression found in queer spaces while showcasing how thoughtful cocktail design can reduce waste and highlight every part of an ingredient.

Built around a low-waste philosophy, this cocktail utilizes watermelon from flesh to rind, transforming ingredients that are often discarded into vibrant flavors through house-made shrubs, pickles, tinctures, and garnishes. Every element is intentionally crafted to demonstrate that sustainability and exceptional hospitality can go hand in hand.

This cocktail is also dedicated to supporting The Outdoorist Oath, an organization founded by Pattie Gonia. Through a unique combination of drag, environmental education, advocacy, and community-building, Pattie Gonia has become one of the most recognizable voices working to make outdoor spaces more inclusive while inspiring people to take action for conservation and climate justice.

The Outdoorist Oath is built on the belief that the outdoors belong to everyone. Through education, leadership development, stewardship programs, and community engagement, the organization works to remove barriers that have historically prevented many people from accessing and feeling welcome in outdoor spaces. Their mission creates opportunities for people of all backgrounds to connect with nature, participate in conservation efforts, and become environmental leaders in their own communities.

Supporting organizations like The Outdoorist Oath means supporting a future where environmental work is more representative, accessible, and impactful. Conservation thrives when diverse voices are included, and protecting our natural spaces requires a community that reflects the people who enjoy and depend on them.
